(Q1) INTERVIEWER: What is your "good" name, please. (A1) PREMNATH DUBEY: Dr. Premnath Dubey. (Q2) INTERVIEWER: What degrees do you have? (A2) PREMNATH DUBEY: I have a B. A. and a M. S. (Q3) INTERVIEWER: From which university? PREMNATH DUBEY: From Sanpurnanand University . (Q3) INTERVIEWER: So, what kind of work do you do here? (A3) PREMNATH DUBEY: I have my dispensary here, where I practice. As far as medicine goes, I do both antibiotics and Ayurveda . (Q4) INTERVIEWER: What's the difference between Western medicine and Ayurveda? (A4) PREMNATH DUBEY: All of the antibiotics are found within Western medicine or "English" medicine, as far as Ayurvedic medicines go-they have different aspects, we use medicinal roots and plants and herbs. All of the antibiotics fall under English medicine, only the antibiotics. (Q5) INTERVIEWER: What kind of patients come by here? (A5) PREMNATH DUBEY: As far as patients go, there are the general patients-(who have) colds, coughs, fevers and sneezing. That's most of them-I prescribe treatment for the cases that come my way-drawing upon both Western medicine and Ayurveda. (Q6) INTERVIEWER: Suppose I have a one month old baby who cries all day and night, what kind of treatment would be possible? (A6) PREMNATH DUBEY: OK, so it's a matter of the patient, as far as a baby is concerned, supposing that it's a really small baby, one or two moths old, he or she can't say anything but there will be symptoms-and these symptoms, well we look closely at these symptoms. So, if a baby is crying, suppose its mouth and lips are dry than we can assume that it's not getting enough water or that it wants water. It's not getting water, that would be the problem. If the baby is crying, then we can also do some research in Ayurveda according to the symptoms. And then we finally prescribe treatment. If there is pain in the baby's stomach, then there are antibiotic tablets and analgesics for lessening the pain in the abdomen-so we'll give the medicines for all of that. There are several different kinds of pain and we prescribe accordingly. (Q7) INTERVIEWER: Suppose my wife has a fever and doesn't want to work or talk-what kind of treatment would be possible? (A7) PREMNATH DUBEY: If she can't eat and she can't talk, then I'd take a look at the fever and see how high it is, I'd take a reading and see what kind of fever it is but she'd have to tell me something. But if there's someone from her home, he'd know something about it, I'd have to ask him about past problems or if there's some complaint that he could tell me about-and we'd. (Q8) INTERVIEWER: Why do some people take Western medicine, some Ayurvedic and some both? (A8) PREMNATH DUBEY: There are some patients who come here who say "I want homeopathic treatment," and I refer them to a homeopathic doctor, and they go there but if Ayurvedic medicine is necessary then we'd prescribe Ayurvedic medicine accordingly. Then there are medicines from the Himalaya drug company and Allopathic doctors that people also use. (Q9) INTERVIEWER: Do people have more faith in Western medicine? (A9) PREMNATH DUBEY: Yes. Absolute faith, because people who go to see a doctor what to get well as soon as possible. In two, four ten minutes, in one to two hours, people want to get well that quickly. To provide fast relief what we have to do is use Western medicine at the very end. But there are also people who think that if the doctor is to prescribe the right treatment and that they want to be permanently cured, then we advise those people that Ayurvedic medicine works very slowly. You'll be fine, you'll be fine and be well for a long time. (Q10) INTERVIEWER: So, in your opinion, Western medicine works very quickly? (A10) PREMNATH DUBEY: Yes, it really works quickly and provides immediate benefits and that's what people want, they want fast relief. That's what people want. Suppose that there's some sort of delay and there's no apparent benefit then no matter how much experience I have people won't consider it-they'll think that medicine's no good, I'm going to another doctor. This is the feeling people have. The point is this, I'm sitting here to making money I've got to do something that's going to work quickly, that's going to provide immediate benefit-it's like that. (Q11) INTERVIEWER: OK. Please tell us something about this village. (A11) PREMNATH DUBEY: This is an ancient, historical place. Raja Vicitra -you know the "Dham" up there, the fort-that's the fort of Raja Vicitra. The fort's main characteristic is that it's the abode of Shastri Brahm -his name is famous throughout the world, whether in America or Japan , people from Italy also come in order to have his darshan. Seeing the situation here, well you know, people come from far and wide. During the nine night festival especially there are big crowds-every year once, twice, in the months of Chait and Kuar the crowds come. And to have Baba's darshan , people come-it's the faith of the people that those afflicted by ghosts come here and go away cured. And just as I've already told you, if there's any help you need from me, I'll do it-yes, sir, I help and will keep helping. (Q12) INTERVIEWER: What should American students understand about what kind of country India is. (A12) PREMNATH DUBEY: Well we think that Americans and foreigners came here, Americans, English etc, my father used to say this that today, well we used to think that we were slaves but today we are slaves in our own country-now we're passing from the situation of slavery and you people had and came here and my father used to say that we were living well at that time. The situation was good, the atmosphere was good, there was work, the administration was good. So, in this way our feeling towards you people is good, and we want you people to come here. We'll treat you with respect. We would also like Indians to live in your country |
